Red faceHi From Las Vegas Nevada

Hello ladies and gents, David from Vegas. Proud owner as of yesterday of a 2012 commander limited in blue. We have owned polaris previous and still do, but it was well time to get into the can am market as im not happy with a lot of things about polaris. so i was not handing them over 20 G again. anyways that is another story and not for here. been waiting for this to arrive since august, finally did and were thrilled.
Now I just have to learn all over again where and what oils get changed as this engine set up is different.

since my owners manual is not yet found by the dealer...lol... a couple quick questions

i know the engine oil and filter is under the passengers seat, i know where the air filter is,
so what other fluids and location get changed on these commanders.
where is the tranny and does it have a front and rear gear box to put oil in?

also has anyone ever thermo tech covered the inside of the engine bay housing, in other words on the inside of the plastic that runs between the driver and passenger.
anyone have a good online place to get fluids at for a good price>

    much appreciated! David

Waiting for mine to come in, so I can't answer any of your questions yet (LBR or someone will be around soon to do that though) but just wanted to congratulate you and welcome you to the forum.

Man, that LTD blue is nice.

BTW, you can get a digital version (pdf) of the 2012 owners guide here (no cost):

    BRP -- Operator's Guides

Hope this helps until you get your paper version.

    Welcome to CT bulldogs101....

Sounds like your into the passenger compartment already ...dipstick..... and the oil filter is towards the front a little behind that three screw cover....highly suggest that you use only BRP oil filters as word on the street for years is aftermart filters don't have the correct bypass spring tension in them....change oil filter on every oil change as needed for your type of driving and heat ....these V-twins will last almost forever internally with proper oil changes..I think the book calls for something like 2.2 (??) qts oil, but I go by the stick reading anyway as that is the level of reference used until next oil change...seems like my last change was only 2.0 qts with filter...

Tranny is a single drain, single fill affair....sounds like popo has a different arrangement of a primary, secondary?? ....dunno...

Frontend is straight forward ....fill till it starts dribbling out, then plug it...

Rearend needs a little ingenuity for proper level according to the manual .....hit me up when your ready for that as I'd like to double check my info before steering folks wrong ....seems like it has to be a little below the bottom of the fill plug, (like 3/8"?).....I've got a cool way of checking that so you don't overfill, but get it right on...

So that leaves the coolant system and I've not been there, done that yet for the Commander but have on my Rhintax....main thing on that system is to purge all the air out ....on each head is a screw to remove to let both heads purge the air out so you don't have steam pocket syndrome ....Lance

    Defaultthanks guys

appreciate it. loving this machine. i usually dont put much into marketing talk, but i can 100% say that canam's slogan is absoultely true :"The facts say a lot, But the ride says it all". lol

we actually wanted the grey one, until we saw them both in the sun, and the blue was stunning and the one we had to have, no doubts!! blue rules!!

as to changing oils, i will do that, i have jetskis and a polaris and change all them at twice as often as the oem suggests, our skis say 100 hours for example and i do it around 35-40. so will do that hear also.
so there is 4 oils that change correct?? 4 things, places. appreciate it

can i bother you for one final question and then i wont bother youfor any more (FINGERS CROSSED THERE>>>>LOL)
the dealer sold me a can am gea oil that is 75w 90 weight, he said that would be used in the other 3 oil changes (not the engine oil of course but the other 3) in reading book iit shows 2 part numbers, one ending in 143 which goes in 2 of those oil areas and 140 which goes in the 3rd one, since there different part numbers i assume they must be different oils, so is it 75w90 for all 3 or not, thanks

Assuming the book is correct, the frontend is 75/90..... the tranny and rearend both take 75/140....so your dealer was way wrong if compared with the book ....

Now, I know the 75/140 is correct for the tranny, but I personally question if the book is correct on the 75/140 for the rear ....too many things point to it being wrong IMO.....and BTW, it's no bother at all ....that's what this site is here for! ....Lance
