    DefaultNew owner of a not-so-new 1000X

    Hi all,
Last week I purchased my first UTV, a 2012 1000X. Not the model I was looking for however as the owner had installed a winch and threw a nice trailer into the deal, I jumped on it. I made a few improvements over the last week including bed rails and a Limited dash insert with Garmin Montana mount. I have a 20+ acre property so I have some room to ride around while I tinker with it.

However, I have been a little disappointed in the engine performance. It seems to me the thing should have a bit more power considering the displacement.

I got it on a stretch of pavement today. Even downhill my top speed was 45 mph. I thought maybe I am using the wrong key, but it's the black one. I was given a total of 4 keys, one black and three grays. The black has a black nylon fob. The grays have a blue, a green and a red fob. The black is currently the only key I've used but from what I'm reading in the forums, I should get a lot more out of it than a top speed of 45.

Please let me know what the other keys are governed for. If I am using the correct key for performance and I'm not getting it, what should I be looking for? A dirty spark arrestor? Fouled plugs? It seemed to be well-maintained with service records and 60 hours of use.

    I appreciate the help!!

    Eric

    Welcome to the site

There were 3 colored keys available when the first Commander rolled off the line...1 black and 1 gray were supplied to buyers......black was unlimited power and gray was restrictive to about 45 mph with noticeable torque loss thru the rpm band. Many peeps have gotten their machines with the black key programmed to gray key restrictions by the dealer, and your case sounds like this may be the problem with yours.

Turn your key on, but don't start the machine and read your scrolling display. It will say what the key is programmed for....black usually is performance. I would check all keys this way. Let us know what you find out.

Dealers can program the black, gray and orange key to any of the programs you tell them you want. We have all our gray keys programmed to black key performance level. I've been told dealers can program up to 8 machines the same....meaning if you had a fleet of 8 Commanders and Mavericks, 1 key could work in all 8 machines...a fleet key so to speak.

Before doing anything else, key your 4 keys sorted out....you may have 4 keys programmed to limiting you at that 45 mph level.

Thanks! I found one of my gray keys set to "performance". Oddly, it was the cleanest key of the four, meaning the former owner may not have ever experienced more than half power.

I read that on the other site...congrats.

If you ever want those other keys reprogrammed, you need to take the commander to a dealer also, not just the keys....have fun and respect that machine
