So, took the commander out this weekend and put her through just over 100 miles of break in, which basically means I drove the piss out of it to see what I could break.

First off the bad:

The cup holders are above the engine compartment and it made my water to hot to drink. The glove box is a bit flimsy and catches on one of the plastic fasteners on the shroud. It is an easy fix but annoyed me every time I opened it up. I have the xt model and the shocks are junk. We pretty much knew that but blowing through the travel was commonplace and a bit uncomfortable for a guy spoiled by long travel and good shock set up. The X model should be much better in this dept. Out of the box.

Other than that it was bullet proof, and trust me, we tried to break it.

I had no mechanical issues whatsoever. It didn't overheat even in a fast (more on that in a min) dune run in 90 plus heat.

Now to the good stuff:

I would like to quote ferris bueller here in describing my overall impression of the comander. "If you have the means, I highly recommend it"

I've driven just about every side x side in just about every form over the years and nothing compares. Other than maybe a turbo rzr or weber rzr it's not even close.

The days of you guys with buggies patiently waiting for the utv guys to catch up are over. This thing hauls butt, and it's bone stock.

When we first arrived I drove it with the stock 27 big horn 2.0 tires and couldn't believe the acceleration and how squarely it was. Switched to four wheel drive and aired down the tires and it was much better. Driving across the flats 68 mph was top speed in both two and four wheel drive. Dunedin pretty good with plenty of power but needed more tire. It would spin the stockers everywhere with just a tap of the throttle.

Swapped out the stickers for a set of full buff smoothies in front and a special cut rear stu blaster (big thanks to Dave at Fullerton sand sports for getting them to me in time) and this is where the fun really started.

Headed over to olds... 40 mph at the top when I started really getting in the throttle after the whoops. With better suspension I could have gone a lot faster. It was pretty fun coming from a 686 built rhino.

In the big dunes it went everywhere, and could accelerate up hill to the next bowl. Keeping good lines was easy and other than having to be on the brakes for g-outs and whoops it was flawless. Never felt tippy on transitions and had enough power to actually roll up to a hill and power up it.

We followed a couple of buggies for awhile and had no problems keeping up and holding the line.

Overall, I was absolutely blown away. For a stock machine it was simply awesome. Worth every penny.

I took some pretty cool video with my go pro and some still shots, I will post em up tomorrow.

Sorry for the long post but, this is the side x side we have been waiting for. Now I can't wait to tear it apart on monday and get it set up for holloween weekend.

Bummer it makes your drinks hot. Other than that, how was the heat in the cab itself? Been wondering about this. The motor seems to sit farther forward in the cab than in the Teryx or Rhino. Wondering if heat in the cab would be an issue with the Commander. Thanks

Great write up Tim, nice to get these different reviews from the various locations people are testing them out at!

Commander at Sand Mountain Nevada

Tim....same problems at Sand Mountain. The cup holders are great for a cup of coffee.

Tried several time to get up Sand Mountain's comp hill and failed! Then realized I had 23 PSI in all four tires, aired them down to 4 psi and flew up the hill.

I raced a modified RZR and a turbo RZR up the hill. I was side by side with the turbo for about 50 yards and he pulled ahead of me about 10 car lengths and stayed there. The modified RZR was about 20 car lengths behind us all.

We raced three time with the same results.

The UTV defiantly needs long travel, seemed a bit tipsy in high speed turns. Factory UTV was out there with their Commander and it had 2" wheel spacers on it and seems to take the roll out.

Like you I did not baby it and found no problems.

My Thoughts Of the Commander

Pros: Very powerful, stylish,Accessories are affordable(compared to other OEM'),comfortable, large cargo & storage area's

cons: It felt unstable under hard cornering, allot of heat from the hand brake area.

out of a 1-10 I rate this a solid 9.

considering this is the first attempt for Brp to produce a side x side I would say they are and will be a big player in the Industry!

Thanks for an honest opinion.....those are the same issues that everyone is talking about...we are putting on Muzzy's race exhaust and wrapping them with tape so hopefully that will help with some of the heat issues....Barbara

At least they are coming out starting the winter months, with the heat issue it would be much more of a problem in the middle of summer. At least we have a few months for someone to come up with a solution to the heat issues before it becomes overwhelming. All this being said for the ones of us that actually have winter.

This was something that people talked a lot about with the Teryx, they felt the cabin area got really hot. It is probably open to interpretation as well, while I may think it is not hot, someone else might.

Winter?? What the hell is that?? Is that the part of the year where the highs are in the 70's?
